'Scariest' bridge finally reopens after £8.02m revamp

A massive bridge often described as the “scariest” in the southern US state of Texas finally reopened last month in a major boost for drivers. Rainbow Bridge is a cantilever bridge spanning the Neches River in southeast of the state, between Port Arthur and Bridge City.

The huge piece of transport infrastructure is known for its steep incline, which looks particularly pronounced from some perspectives, and has got a lot of attention online. The structure features an usually high arch to accomodate local shipping in the area. To avoid any potential issues it was built with a vertical clearance of 177 feet.

Combined with narrow lanes, it makes for a dramatic-looking drive as you cross transit over the water between the counties of Jefferson and Orange.

As of 1997 the bridge has been a one-way westbound traffic only route.

The bridge was closed in March 2025 for major maintance works, with a $10.9million (around £8.03million) contract awarded to Florida-based contractor Southern Road and Bridge.

The extensive structural work included a full-depth concrete deck restoration, repairs to steel railing, as well as replacing 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins, as per 12 News Now.

The overhaul meant drivers have had to alter their routes and funnel through the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge, which is normally eastbound only, but was temporarily adapted to accomodate the altered traffic patterns that resulted.

The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed the completion of the works in a post on X on March 26, with an inspection on taking place as the bridge was readied for use.

It reopened to traffic the following month on Saturday, April 11, restoring an important route for motorists.

The construction of Rainbow Bridge began back in 1936 and took two years. It’s regularly included in lists of the most unusual and scary-looking bridges in the world.
