Donald Trump breaks silence on Starmer resignation with brutal 'hurt himself' comment

US President Donald Trump has commented on UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation as leader of the Labour Party.

Mr Trump said: “He’s a very nice man. He’s sort of a friend of mine.”

“I mean, he was not good to us with NATO… he said we can’t use the island.”

“I mean wish him well.”

Mr Trump said Sir Keir has “two problems”: energy and immigration.

He said the UK has avoided drilling for oil in the North Sea due to environmental reasons and attributed this in part to Sir Keir’s downfall.

Mr Trump added that crime in the UK was another reason for the PM’s resignation.

“He’s really hurt himself very, very badly.”

Mr Trump and Sir Keir have had a publicly tumultuous relationship. The two leaders publicly clashed over Iran and UK support for the US in the war.

Mr Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social before Sir Keir’s announcement that he would be quitting.

Trump wrote in the post: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects- IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT”

Sir Keir resigned as leader of the Labour Party later on Monday, June 22 in an announcement outside 10 Downing Street.

He acknowledged he had lost the support of his MPs and promised an “orderly handover of power” to his successor in an emotional statement.

The man perceived to be on course to enter No. 10 is Andy Burnham. Sir Keir’s announcement came just hours before Mr Burnham arrived in Westminster following last week’s success in the Makerfield by-election.

If Mr Burnham is the only candidate to receive the support needed to stand in the contest for the vacant Labour leadership, he could become prime minister in mid-July.

He was formally sworn in as an MP at the start of the Commons business for the day at around 2.40pm, five hours after Sir Keir announced his decision to quit.
