DSS probes operatives over dragging Sowore out of court

The Department of State Services (DSS) has launched an internal investigation into the conduct of its operatives following the controversy surrounding the remand of Omoyele Sowore, an activist and presidential candidate.
The decision comes after a viral video showed armed DSS personnel forcefully escorting Sowore from the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja after proceedings in his ongoing trial.
In a statement issued by Favour Dozie, its spokesperson, the agency said its director-general had ordered an immediate review of the actions of officers involved in the incident.
The DSS said public concerns generated by the footage made it necessary to examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
According to the agency, the incident followed a disagreement involving Sowore and an official of the Nigerian Correctional Service shortly after the court ordered his remand.
The DSS noted that despite being scheduled for transfer through correctional service arrangements, Sowore eventually entered a DSS vehicle after the proceedings.
The agency also clarified that it did not oppose any bail request filed by the activist, stressing that the decision to revoke his bail was solely made by the court.
Sowore is currently facing charges linked to social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a criminal. He has denied the allegations.
The DSS explained that legal action was initiated after the activist allegedly failed to comply with an earlier request to withdraw the statements, adding that the case was intended to seek judicial interpretation of the limits of free speech and alleged cyberbullying.
The agency assured the public that findings from the investigation would guide any necessary actions regarding the conduct of its personnel.
