Scotland football fan calls 911 over 'terrifying' shooting during World Cup trip

A Scottish fan who is in the US for the World Cup recalled witnessing an alleged car crash and shooting incident at the hotel he is staying at. Stuart Mackelvie, who is at the Sturbridge Hotel in the Boston area for Scotland’s game against Morocco, resorted to call 911 at around 1am on Thursday morning in the midst of what he called a “terrifying” incident.

Speaking to local media, he said he was trying to get to sleep when a car alarm woke him up. He said to have then seen a car crashed through the wall of the hotel, right below the room where he was staying, and a woman who then allegedly jumped out of the vehicle and began shooting.

Sturbridge Police said they were called to the hotel at 00.55 am to report of a shooting.

They have not released any details yet but the force said there was no threat to the public.

“We ask the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators the time necessary to conduct a thorough and complete investigation,” Sturbridge Police Chief Earl Dessert said in a statement.

Speaking to CBS, Mr Mackelvie said: “I heard gunshots and then I looked out the window again and a lady had driven her SUV into the side of the hotel and then she jumped out and was shouting, ‘Where are you? Where are you?’ and then shot three times quickly, it seemed like, into the hotel room.

“Then I heard smashing glass, and I think she maybe climbed into the room and then there was loads of banging and stuff like she was trying to break a door down or something and then I called 911.”

He also said several police officers and three ambulances arrived at the scene minutes later, the Scottish Daily Express reports.

Saying that police knocked on every door, checked on the hotel guests and took statements from them, he added: “It was terrifying.”

Mr Mackelvie also explained he had just arrived into town from Scotland to see the team’s next World Cup match at Boston Stadium in Foxboro on Friday, where his team will face Morocco.

“I’ve seen this stuff on TV, but I’ve never been anywhere near anything like this,” Mackelvie said. “In the UK the police aren’t armed routinely, the public aren’t armed routinely so a domestic disturbance doesn’t get to this stage,” he also added.
