Veteran actor Elegbeje Ado dies after brief illness

Taiwo Adeshina, a veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor popularly known as Elegbeje Ado, has died after a brief illness, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than two decades in Nigeria’s indigenous film industry.
The actor’s death was announced on Tuesday by fellow Nollywood star Kunle Afod, who paid tribute to the late actor in a heartfelt social media post, describing him as one of the legends of Yoruba cinema.
Afod praised Adeshina’s immense contributions to the industry, noting that his talent and memorable performances earned him a lasting place in the hearts of movie lovers.
He also extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, colleagues and fans, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Although the circumstances surrounding his death have not been officially disclosed, reports indicate that Adeshina died on Monday following a brief illness.
Popularly known by his stage name, Elegbeje Ado, Adeshina built a distinguished career portraying traditional rulers, community leaders and other culturally significant characters in Yoruba films. The nickname became synonymous with his identity after one of his most celebrated movie roles.
Beyond acting, Adeshina was also a Christian minister, balancing his pastoral calling with his career in the entertainment industry.
His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and admirers, who have described him as a respected actor whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of practitioners in the Yoruba movie industry.
Details of his funeral arrangements have yet to be announced by the family.
