Stanley Nwabali returns to Chippa United

South African Premiership club Chippa United have confirmed the re-signing of Nigerian international goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, just months after his departure from the Eastern Cape side.

Nwabali left the Chilli Boys in February after requesting the termination of his contract, with hopes of securing a move to a bigger club either in South Africa or abroad following his impressive performances for both Chippa United and Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

However, despite attracting interest, the 30-year-old was unable to complete a transfer before the close of the transfer window.

He has now returned to his former club.

Chippa United announced the goalkeeper’s return in a statement on their official X account on Sunday.

The club said: “Chippa United Football Club is delighted to welcome Stanley Nwabali back to the Chilli Boys. 

“After taking time away, Stanley Nwabali returns to the Eastern Cape, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club.”

Although the club did not reveal the length or financial details of the agreement, Nwabali’s return is expected to strengthen the squad as they prepare for the new campaign.

The former Katsina United goalkeeper joined Chippa United in 2022 and established himself as one of the Premier Division’s most dependable goalkeepers, making 66 league appearances during his first spell with the club.

His commanding displays also helped him cement his place as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, particularly after his outstanding performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up.

Nwabali’s form had sparked widespread expectations of a high-profile transfer, but with no suitable move materialising, both player and club have agreed to reunite.

His return offers Chippa United valuable experience, leadership and stability between the posts, while giving the goalkeeper another opportunity to showcase his quality and potentially revive his ambitions of earning a move to a bigger club in the future.

Supporters have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing optimism that the fan favourite can quickly rediscover the form that made him one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in South African football.
