Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has reaffirmed his administration’s resolve not to negotiate with or surrender to criminal groups, declaring that the government will continue to intensify efforts to end banditry across the state.

The governor made the pledge on Thursday during a condolence visit to Bungudu Local Government Area following last week’s bandit attack that claimed lives and left several residents abducted.

According to a statement by Mr Lawal’s spokesman, Sulaiman Bala-Idris, the governor began the visit at the palace of the Emir of Bungudu, Hassan Attahiru, where he sympathised with the emirate, bereaved families and the entire community over the tragedy.

Addressing the gathering, the governor described the attack as a difficult trial but assured residents that his administration remained committed to restoring peace and security in the state.

“I am here to express my sympathy and offer condolences to the families, the Emir and the people of Bungudu following last week’s bandit attacks,” he said.

“This is a test from Almighty Allah, and we will overcome it. The state government is committing all available resources and efforts to end the menace of banditry.

“I urge everyone to remain patient because this is a sensitive issue that requires perseverance and continued prayers. I pray that Allah grants the bereaved families the fortitude to bear the loss and forgives those who lost their lives.

“We will continue to provide all necessary assistance to those who sustained injuries and will do everything possible to secure the safe return of those who were abducted.”

Responding, the Emir of Bungudu commended the governor for his commitment to tackling insecurity and expressed confidence that the state would eventually overcome the challenge of banditry.

“As a member of the State Security Council, I know the efforts the governor is making. I am confident that we will overcome the challenge of banditry,” the monarch said.

“We appreciate your condolence visit. It means a great deal to the people of Bungudu Local Government Area.”

During the visit, Governor Lawal also met with the families of the late Bello Umar Bungudu and other victims to personally convey his condolences and reassure them of the government’s support.
