Bloodshed across Nigeria as fresh attacks in Sokoto, Plateau, Benue leave 30 dead, dozens abducted

A fresh wave of violent attacks across Sokoto, Plateau and Benue states has left at least 30 people dead, several others injured and dozens abducted, raising fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Nigeria.

The deadliest incident occurred in Tsamaye community in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where heavily armed bandits reportedly invaded the community late Monday night.

The attackers opened fire on residents, killed at least 21 people and abducted 37 others during an assault that lasted for several hours.

Witnesses said the gunmen also set houses ablaze, rustled livestock and forced thousands of frightened residents to flee their homes in search of safety. While the casualty and abduction figures were reported by local sources, authorities said investigations were ongoing.

In a separate attack in Sokoto State, suspected Lakurawa militants reportedly stormed Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area, killing a police officer and two civilians. The attackers also injured several people, stole cattle and destroyed operational vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps before security operatives repelled the assault.

In Plateau State, gunmen attacked Riyom Local Government Area, killing two security operatives in another violent incident that underscored the persistent insecurity in the region.

Benue State also recorded fresh bloodshed as police confirmed the killing of four people in Aboushwa village, Guma Local Government Area. The attack has heightened fears among residents of renewed violence in communities already grappling with recurring armed assaults.

Security agencies have intensified operations in the affected areas, with police authorities confirming that personnel were deployed following distress calls. Investigations are continuing as efforts to track down the attackers and restore calm remain underway.

The latest attacks add to the growing number of deadly incidents across Nigeria’s northern and central regions, where communities continue to face recurring violence linked to armed banditry, militant activity and communal conflicts.
