A British tourist has been found dead in a hotel room in Thailand after a “Do Not Disturb” sign was left on his door for several days.
Staff made the grim discovery after entering the room on Monday morning, when the 41-year-old holidaymaker was due to check out.
He had checked in on 24 July for a planned 10-day stay. Staff said the room had last been cleaned on 27 July, with a “Do Not Disturb” sign hung on the door from that point onward, and that no one had entered the room in the days that followed as employees respected the sign.
On Monday, the manager of the hotel in Patong went to check on the British national but received no response.
He opened the door and found the man dead inside at around 11am.
Police and emergency services were called to the scene, and reports indicate there were no signs of forced entry or a struggle.
A forensic doctor has determined that the tourist likely died between 12 and 24 hours before his body was found, though authorities are carrying out a full autopsy to establish the exact circumstances of his death.
His body has been moved to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further examination.
The discovery comes after a retired British engineer was found dead in his room in Thailand just days after divorcing his Thai wife.
The 74-year-old, a former aviation engineer from Southport, had been bedridden for months while living alone in the rural Nan province in the north of the country, relying on his wife’s relatives for daily care and meals.
He was discovered dead in May, only days after finalising the divorce.
