An Islamic leader has publicly apologised following backlash over a trending video in which he was heard calling on Muslims to kill or behead anyone who insults or calls Prophet Muhammad a false prophet.
“Please, Ghanaians, forgive me. I made that statement out of anger. I was only teaching Islamic law,” he said in the apology video, which followed a day after the original clip began circulating widely and drew sharp criticism online.
The original remarks sparked alarm among many Ghanaians, with social media users calling for authorities to investigate whether the statement amounted to incitement.
The controversy has added to a broader, ongoing conversation in Ghana around religious tolerance and free expression, occurring alongside recent debate over the government’s introduction of Arabic as an optional subject in public schools.
Ghana has long been regarded as a model of peaceful Christian-Muslim coexistence in the region, making viral incidents like this one, however isolated, a source of unusual public tension.
It remains unclear whether the Ghana Police will take any formal action regarding the original comments despite the apology.
