JUST IN: I Spoke With Onaiyekan; I Almost Wept; He Said, “I Used Your Courage, And They’re Insulting Me–Ulasi
Chief Dan Ulasi has disclosed details of a recent phone conversation with Cardinal John Onaiyekan, revealing that the Catholic cleric reached out after facing criticism over his comments about the meeting between Catholic bishops and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview on Signature TV, Ulasi said he was surprised to receive the call, noting that it was the first time Cardinal Onaiyekan had contacted him directly. He added that the gesture moved him emotionally.
According to Ulasi, the Cardinal told him he regularly watches his television interviews and draws inspiration from his outspoken views on national issues.
Recalling the conversation, Ulasi said Onaiyekan explained that he had spoken boldly about the bishops’ meeting with the President but was later subjected to insults and criticism.
“I spoke with Onaiyekan four days ago. I didn’t know how he got my number, and I was almost weeping. I said, ‘Oga, why did you call me?’ He said, ‘I watch you every time when I wake up in the morning, I go around the stations to know where you are having an interview.
I learn a lot when I listen to you, and I used your courage and bravery to say something, and they’re insulting me,’” Ulasi said.
Ulasi said he encouraged the Cardinal not to be discouraged by the criticism. He added that although he is an Anglican, he was educated in Catholic schools and has great respect for the Catholic Church.
He said he advised Onaiyekan to remain focused on praying for the nation’s leaders rather than worrying about those attacking him.
