NDLEA Discovers Fentanyl-Linked Chemical In Ogun Meth Lab

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has revealed that a precursor chemical used in the synthesis of fentanyl was discovered during the dismantling of a methamphetamine lab in a deep forest in Ogun State.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that has caused a surge in overdose deaths in the United States and other countries in recent years, and its precursor compounds are closely watched worldwide since little amounts can be used to make massive amounts of the drug.

According to the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl will continue to be the primary cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2025.

The lethal substance was discovered in May 2026 after NDLEA agents dismantled a vast, industrial-scale methamphetamine factory concealed in a forest between the Abidagba and Iroto towns in Ijebu East, Ogun State.

The raid resulted in 10 arrests, including three Mexicans and seven Nigerians, and the recovery of 2.4 tons of meth and chemicals worth over ₦480 billion.

According to a statement released on Thursday by NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), the discovery was made possible by the utilization of forensic technology provided to the NDLEA with the cooperation of the US INL.

Marwa made the statement while greeting Derek Tolliver, Country Director of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau of the United States, who led a delegation from the US Government Accountability Office at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

He stated that the agency relied on its forensic laboratories to analyze the chemicals collected from the illicit laboratory and establish their intended use, which later revealed that one of the precursor compounds recovered may be utilized in the manufacturing of fentanyl.

“After the seizure and dismantling of the meth factory in Ogun State’s deep forest two months ago, we relied on forensic equipment to identify the precursor ingredients.

“And we discovered one of the precursor chemicals was in fact for the production of fentanyl, which is bad news. Nobody wants to hear that word,” the NDLEA chairman said.

Marwa noted that the fentanyl-related precursor made up only a small portion of the compounds collected from the laboratory, emphasizing that the discovery may have gone undetected without the agency’s advanced forensic technologies.

“It was only a small portion of the precursor compounds. “That would have gone unnoticed if not for these modern tools,” he explained.

He stated that the discovery highlighted the need of forensic laboratories created and equipped with US government backing.

According to him, the INL modernized the NDLEA’s forensic laboratory in Lagos and assisted in the development of new laboratories in Abuja and Enugu to increase the agency’s capacity to analyze illicit narcotics and precursor chemicals.

Marwa stated that forensic laboratories have become critical to the agency’s law enforcement operations, notably in identifying compounds discovered during drug investigations.

He thanked the US government and its agencies, particularly the INL, Drug Enforcement Administration, AFRICOM, and FBI, for their ongoing support of the NDLEA.

Tolliver previously complimented Marwa and the NDLEA on what he regarded as the agency’s recent operational successes.

He stated that the objective of his visit was to deepen the existing collaboration between the US government and the NDLEA and to expand on prior INL-supported programs.

“Finally, I’d like to congratulate you on all of your victories over the last few months, both with and under your leadership. “It’s incredible how much this organization has grown,” Tolliver remarked.

He reassured the NDLEA of the US government’s commitment to sustaining the relationship and achieving joint program objectives.
