Ogun declares Thursday public holiday for Isese Day

The Ogun Government has declared Thursday as a work-free day to commemorate the 2026 Isese Day celebration to celebrate African traditional religion.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abeokuta.

Mr Akinmade said that the observance of the Isese day underscored the administration’s commitment to preserving and promoting Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values.

He recalled that Aug. 20 was formally declared a public holiday in the state in 2023, following a resolution of the Ogun House of Assembly and approval by Gov. Dapo Abiodun.

“Isese Day provides an opportunity for adherents of Yoruba traditional religion to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and promote their spiritual and cultural values.

“The celebration will also promote community among practitioners and enable the wider society to appreciate and respect the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people,” he said.

Akinmade said that the administration recognises the role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving the state’s identity and strengthening social cohesion.

He urged residents to celebrate the day peacefully and responsibly while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others.
