Ogun Gov Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Isese Day

Ogun State’s government has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.

The state said the declaration shows its commitment to protecting and promoting Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values.

August 20 was first declared a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023 after the state assembly voted for it and Governor Dapo Abiodun approved the decision.

Isese Day gives followers of Yoruba traditional religion a chance to honour their ancestors, perform traditional ceremonies and promote the values and teachings that are part of their spiritual and cultural practices.

The celebration also brings people who share the same beliefs together and gives the wider community an opportunity to learn about and respect Yoruba cultural heritage.

The government said that observing Isese Day shows it recognises the important role that culture and traditional institutions play in keeping the state’s identity strong and bringing people together socially.

The government urged residents to celebrate the day in a peaceful and responsible way, while respecting the beliefs, rights and practices of others.
