Red Cross donates 700 cartons of therapeutic food to Sokoto

The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), Sokoto Branch, has officially handed over 700 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) to the Sokoto State Government.

The donation is aimed at tackling the burden of child malnutrition among vulnerable communities across the state.

The items were supplied with financial support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) under the Malnutrition Emergency Appeal Programme (MEAP).

Available information indicated that the supplies were formally handed over on Friday, to the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency for distribution to targeted beneficiaries.

The commodities are expected to be distributed across the three local government areas where the MEAP is currently being implemented, namely Sokoto North, Sokoto South and Wamakko Local Government Areas.

Speaking while receiving the items on behalf of the state government, a representative of the SSPHCDA appreciated the Nigerian Red Cross Society and IFRC for their continued support towards tackling malnutrition in the state.

The representative assured that the donated RUTF would be used strictly for its intended purpose, adding that the commodities would be distributed to children identified as requiring nutritional support.

“We appreciate the Nigerian Red Cross Society and IFRC for this important intervention and their continued support to the state in addressing malnutrition,” the representative said.

He added, “We assure you that these commodities will be properly utilised and distributed to the targeted beneficiaries in the implementing local government areas.”

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Sokoto Branch, said the donation formed part of its broader humanitarian intervention to reduce the impact of malnutrition on vulnerable children and strengthen community-based responses to the problem.

The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Sokoto State Government, health authorities, development partners and other stakeholders to strengthen interventions aimed at preventing and treating malnutrition.

The Red Cross said it would continue to support vulnerable communities through humanitarian programmes designed to improve access to essential health and nutritional services across the state.
