Sowore Demands Major Salary Boost for Nigerian Workers

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has advocated for a monthly salary of ₦500,000 for Nigerian workers.

The human rights activist made this assertion in a statement posted on his verified social media account, urging Nigerians to vote for leadership genuinely committed to improving workers’ conditions rather than those who have consistently treated workers adversarially.

His remarks followed the ₦500,000 minimum wage demand issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, both of which made this demand during a workers’ rights summit held in Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State.

Responding to this development, Sowore expressed satisfaction that labour union leadership had finally reached the position his party had long advocated, asserting that Nigerian workers deserve a national minimum wage of no less than ₦500,000.

He characterised this demand as both necessary and overdue given prevailing economic realities and escalating living costs.

He emphasised that with consensus now established among stakeholders, focus must shift from declarations toward concrete action, calling for unified effort until Nigerian workers receive what he termed a living wage of at least ₦500,000.

The current minimum wage for Nigerian workers stands at ₦70,000.
