Emir of Gumel, Ahmed Sani II, dies at 87

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died after reigning over the Gumel Emirate for nearly 46 years.

The revered traditional ruler died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 87.

Mr Sani was born in 1939.

He left behind 3 wives and 30 children.

The deceased monarch ascended the throne during the administration of late Kano State Governor, Muhammadu Abubakar-Rimi.

In his condolence message, Prof. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, described the late monarch as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all.

Mr Pantami, in the statement on Thursday, expressed profound sadness over the death of the monarch, saying his passing was accepted as the will of Almighty Allah.

“His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, the Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, passed away today, Thursday, in Cairo, Egypt,” he said.

According to the statement, the late Emir ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, and remained on the throne until his death on September 3, 2026, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in northern Nigeria.

Mr Pantami extended his condolences to the immediate family of the deceased, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Jigawa State Government and the people of the state, as well as Nigerians across the country.

He described the late monarch as a respected scholar who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Gumel Emirate.

“The late Emir was a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom, and a father to all. He dedicated his life to the service of his people, the promotion of peace, education, and the preservation of our cultural values,” Pantami said.

He added that the monarch’s leadership, humility and commitment to community development would be greatly missed by the people he served.

The death of the Emir is expected to trigger mourning across the Gumel Emirate, particularly among members of the royal family, traditional title holders, community leaders and residents who had looked to the traditional institution for leadership and guidance.

A historic emirate

Gumel Emirate is regarded as one of the oldest and most respected traditional institutions in northern Nigeria, with a history dating back to the 18th century.

The emirate has historically been associated with scholarship, governance and service to humanity, producing scholars, jurists and community leaders who contributed to the intellectual and moral development of the region.

Over the centuries, the traditional institution has remained an important custodian of the cultural identity and heritage of its people, while also playing a role in promoting peace, unity and community development.

The late Ahmed Sani II presided over the emirate for almost five decades, during which he served as custodian of its traditional values and provided leadership to generations of residents.

His death therefore marks the end of a long reign and represents a significant moment in the history of the Gumel traditional institution.

Pantami prayed to Allah to forgive the late Emir’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.

He also prayed for Allah to grant the deceased’s family, the Gumel Emirate and the people of Jigawa State the strength and fortitude to bear what he described as an irreplaceable loss.

“May Allah admit him into Jannatul Firdaus together with our departed parents and loved ones,” he added.
