Scott McTominay is set to undergo heart surgery this week, his club Napoli have confirmed.
The former Manchester United midfielder is set to be out for a number of weeks after the onset of a ‘benign arrhythmia’.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Italian giants indicated that McTominay, 29, will have the treatment in the next few days.
The statement read: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days.
“He will be available again after the international break.”
McTominay’s diagnosis means that his heart is occasionally beating out of its normal rhythm.
An arrhythmia is an abnormal or irregular heart rhythm and is usually treated with medication to help control heart rate and to improve symptoms. In the event that medication does not work, an ablation can be the next course of action.
McTominay joined Napoli two years ago and has found a great deal of success in Italy. His first season saw him named the best player in Serie A as he helped the team to win the league.
