NDC backs Makinde’s call for UN probe into Oyo school abduction

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has endorsed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent United Nations (UN) investigation into the recent abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The party said the circumstances surrounding the incident had raised serious concerns that warranted a transparent and impartial international investigation to establish the facts and strengthen public confidence in the ongoing probe.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., said the party believed that a UN-backed investigation would help uncover the truth, ensure accountability and secure justice for the victims and their families.

“We fully support Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for a United Nations investigation into the Oriire school abduction. This is not about politics; it is about ensuring that every question surrounding the incident is answered through a transparent, credible and independent process that Nigerians can trust,” the statement said.

The opposition party stressed that the safety and security of Nigerian children should not be subjected to political disagreements or speculation.

“The security of our children must never become a subject of speculation or partisan debate. We urge the Federal Government to embrace every legitimate effort aimed at uncovering the truth, strengthening public confidence in our security institutions and preventing similar tragedies in the future,” the party stated.

According to the NDC, the lives of Nigerian children are too valuable to be treated with anything short of the highest level of accountability.

The party maintained that an independent investigation would not only clarify the circumstances surrounding the abduction but also reinforce public trust in the country’s security and justice systems.

Governor Makinde had earlier called for a UN-led investigation into the incident, arguing that an independent inquiry would provide credibility to the findings and address concerns raised by members of the public over the circumstances of the abduction.

The Oriire school kidnapping has generated widespread concern across the country, with calls for improved security in schools and greater protection for students and teachers.
