Gov. Adeleke accuses EFCC of freezing Osun govt account

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of freezing the bank account of the state, without explanation.

Mr Adeleke made this allegation at a news conference, on Wednesday in Osogbo.

The governor stated that he got a letter from the state’s banker that the anti-graft commission had instructed it to freeze the state’s account.

“This morning, we received a letter from our banker, forwarding a letter from the EFCC, instructing the bank to freeze Osun State Government account.

“This action was taken without any court order,” he stated.

The governor decried the situation where due process was not followed in a democracy, stating that the Rule of Law must always prevail.

Mr Adeleke said that his government would not accept a situation where federal agencies trample on the constitutional rights of sub national governments.

He said that the EFCC’s action was a threat to democracy and if allowed, it would destroy the fabric of Nigeria’s democracy.

Adeleke requested that the EFCC chairman should explain why the state account was frozen and also show proof to support whatever reason(s) for its action.

The governor said that the state Attorney General has been instructed to challenge the EFCC’s action at the Federal High Court, Osogbo.
