A Nigerian mother has sparked outrage online after revealing that she sun-dries her baby son’s used disposable diapers and reuses them to save money.
The woman, identified as Chiamaka Maryjane, shared the practice in a Facebook post while lamenting what she described as the amount of money she spends on diapers.
According to her, her baby boy rarely defecates but still requires diapers because he urinates frequently.
She said she sometimes disposes of as many as five partially soaked diapers a day, which she considers wasteful.
“Wearing my baby boy diapers is a total waste of money. My baby boy hardly poo. But I still have to wear him diapers to keep him comfortable and dry when he urinates,” she wrote.
She added that most of the diapers were only partially wet when she threw them away, making her feel she was not getting value for her money.
The mother suggested that manufacturers should consider producing diapers specifically designed for baby boys to help reduce waste and cost.
However, she revealed that she had adopted an alternative method to save money.
“Recently I started sun drying the used diapers and when it dries I turn the other side that was not soaked and I reuse it as the front part while the other part that was sun dried as the back part of diaper,” she explained.
According to her, the practice has helped her reduce the number of diapers she purchases.
Her revelation has, however, generated strong reactions online, with many people expressing concern about the hygiene and health implications of reusing disposable diapers.
Her post caught the attention of many, including women from other continents, and they blasted her.
