The chairman of Nigeria’s electoral commission, Professor Josiah Amupitan, has promised that the commission will remain fair and impartial during the 2027 elections.
Amupitan made the assurance on Tuesday at a national peace accord event held ahead of the presidential election.
He stressed that the electoral commission has no preferred candidate and does not support any political party.
The commission’s only interest is in conducting a fair election, regardless of which party wins or loses.
He urged political parties and candidates to base their campaigns on issues and practical ideas rather than turning the election into a contest of violence and personal attacks.
Amupitan called on politicians to present the 2027 campaign as a place where ideas compete, not as warfare.
He said Nigerians are tired of insults and personal attacks and instead want to hear clear, concrete and measurable plans from candidates about how they will solve the country’s problems.
Amupitan assured Nigerians that the electoral commission was making good progress in preparing for the 2027 elections.
He said the commission is scaling up its operations to manage the large number of staff needed for the nationwide exercise.
The commission will deploy 1.4 million temporary workers across more than 176,000 polling units to conduct the election.
