Armed military personnel have assumed security responsibilities at the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
The military deployment occurred on Monday as security preparations intensified throughout the state prior to the August 15 poll.
Fully armed soldiers were positioned at the INEC facility entrance, whilst three Armoured Personnel Carriers were positioned to reinforce perimeter security.
Prior to military deployment, riot control police units and operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had been managing security at the INEC offices.
A security source indicated that military personnel arrived on Sunday and assumed full security authority on Monday morning.
The source confirmed that other security agencies would maintain presence alongside military forces as the election approached, with police and civil defence personnel expected to expand their activities in subsequent days.
Three Armoured Personnel Carriers accompanied the military deployment as part of overall security arrangements.
The source stated that whilst military personnel now oversee security operations, other security personnel remained at their assigned positions to provide complementary coverage.
The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed substantial readiness for Saturday’s election.
The Osun State INEC Public Relations Officer indicated that the commission had completed twelve of thirteen scheduled pre-election activities, with the final activity constituting election day itself.
Sensitive electoral materials were scheduled for distribution to various local government areas on Thursday in advance of Saturday’s poll.
