Tinubu hails rescue of 308 Kwara, Niger kidnap victims, orders stronger early warning systems

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the rescue of 308 abducted Nigerians in coordinated security operations in Niger and Kwara states, directing security agencies to strengthen early warning mechanisms to prevent future attacks.

The President said the successful operation underscored the growing effectiveness of intelligence-led security efforts and inter-agency collaboration in the fight against kidnapping and terrorism.

In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, NCTC, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force for successfully rescuing the victims.

According to the Presidency, 163 of those rescued were abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while 145 others were rescued after being kidnapped in Niger State.

The victims were freed from the Kainji Lake National Park forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State during what the Presidency described as the largest same-day rescue operation ever carried out by the joint security team.

President Tinubu praised the security agencies for their bravery, professionalism and seamless collaboration, saying the operation demonstrated the increasing capacity of the country’s security architecture.

“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.

The Presidency disclosed that the rescued victims are currently receiving first aid and other essential medical care at the medical facility in Wawa Cantonment.

It added that after completing medical evaluations, they would be handed over to the governments of their respective states for rehabilitation, comprehensive care and reunification with their families.

While celebrating the successful rescue, Mr Tinubu stressed the need to strengthen the country’s security framework to forestall similar incidents.

He directed security agencies and relevant stakeholders to immediately reinforce early warning systems, improve community-based intelligence gathering and enhance rapid response capabilities to prevent future attacks.

The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity across the country, assuring Nigerians that the government would continue to intensify efforts to eliminate security threats, protect vulnerable communities and restore lasting peace nationwide.
