A violent clash between students of Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Eastern Region has resulted in serious destruction of school property, injuries, and the temporary closure of both institutions.
According to reports, the confrontation, which occurred in the Akuapem North Municipality, was linked to a misunderstanding involving tablets distributed to students by the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The situation reportedly escalated into a reprisal attack, with parts of both schools damaged and some facilities set on fire.
At Okuapeman SHS, the Visual Arts studio, a teachers’ office, and seven classrooms were reportedly destroyed, while examination papers and certificates stored in affected areas were also burnt. Mount Sinai SHS also recorded damage to a storeroom and boys’ washroom.
Six students of Okuapeman SHS were reportedly injured during the incident and taken to the hospital. Four have since been treated and discharged, while two remained on admission at the time of reporting.
Following an assessment of the situation, the Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) ordered the temporary closure of both schools to restore calm and allow investigations to continue.
Education authorities have condemned the violence, warning that students found responsible for destroying property or taking part in the clashes will face appropriate sanctions.
The incident has sparked concerns about student discipline and the need for peaceful ways of resolving disagreements within senior high schools.
