Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, former Attorney-General of Lagos State, distinguished lawyer and legal scholar, has died at the age of 92.

Kasunmu died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026, according to the Baptist Academy Old Students Association (BAOSA).

His death was announced by the Global President of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association, Olumide Ajomale, in a statement issued on behalf of the association’s National Executive Council.

Kasunmu was a member of the Baptist Academy Class of 1953 and a trustee of the Baptist Academy Old Students Association.

Ajomale described the late legal scholar as “a towering figure in law, scholarship, and national development,” while highlighting his contributions as a mentor, scholar and advocate.

The statement read: “With gratitude to God for a life well spent in service to God and humanity, we announce the passing of our distinguished alumnus, Professor Alfred Bandele Kasunmu, SAN, who departed peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, 9th August 2026 at the age of 92.”

Kasunmu served as Attorney-General of Lagos State from 1975 to 1978 and was later recognised as one of Nigeria’s distinguished legal scholars.

The association said he embodied the values of Baptist Academy, particularly “Integrity, Discipline, and Service,” while also describing him as a cherished patriarch to his family.

BAOSA said it honoured Kasunmu last year with the BAOSA Order of Excellence Award as one of 170 distinguished old students of Baptist Academy during its 170th Founders Day celebration.

It added that his “legacy of wisdom, mentorship, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire generations of Baptacads and Nigerians at large.”

The association said it took solace in the life he lived and the numerous people he impacted through his dedication to law, education and humanity.

BAOSA urged old students of the institution worldwide to keep Kasunmu’s family in their prayers during the mourning period.

“Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” the statement added.
